Library Activities
Library Orientation
At the start of every year, students are briefed on the procedures to borrow and return books in the library as well as the organisation structure of books in the library. They are also updated on the programmes and activities through the year that they can participate in.
Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Programme
All students are required to read an English or a Mother Tongue storybook daily from the time they arrive at their assembly areas in the morning till 7.30 a.m. Students can read any book of their choice during this time. Through this programme, we hope to cultivate a routine of self-directed and independent reading.
Library Period
During library period, students are involved in a variety of activities that will enable them to enrich themselves. Some of the activities are shared below.
- Classes are scheduled to visit the library on a weekly basis during their English lessons. During this period, students will have the opportunity to borrow English and Mother Tongue books as well as use the facilities provided in the library for reading related activities.
- Lessons are conducted to introduce various authors and a wide range of genres to our students. This allows them to learn about the background of the authors and their writing styles used in their books.
- In order to nurture independent learners and avid readers, sharing sessions are encouraged for students to share the stories they have read with their classmates.
Book Displays in the Library
Every fortnight, various book displays are put up in the library to showcase a variety of authors or genres of books. During some weeks, books related to festivals or celebrations are also displayed. Students are able to borrow the books on display if they are interested to do so.
iRead Books (Mini Library in the Classroom)
All students are encouraged to develop the love for reading. Thus, each class is issued with sufficient books for pupils to read. Students are encouraged to read daily and exchange the book with another when they are done with it.
Short Story Video Screenings
Every Monday, short stories are screened in the library for students during their recess slots. These video screenings capture our students’ attention due to their colourful animations and entertaining story lines.
Storytelling Sessions
Every Wednesday, teachers come to the library during the Primary 1 and Primary 2 recess slots for a storytelling session with our students. The lower primary students enjoy these sessions as the teachers make the stories come alive right in front of them.
Boggle Fundays
Every Wednesday, our Primary 3 to Primary 6 students join in a fun boggle session in the library during their recess slots. The students have fun competing with each other to form the most number of words possible within an allocated time.
Monthly Activities
Students come to the library to take part in various activities throughout the year. Some of the activities include Hari Raya card making, Lantern making, Festival colouring, crossword puzzles and quizzes.
Loyalty Card Programme
Borrow and read books to exchange for attractive gifts! The loyalty card programme rewards students for borrowing and reading books available in our library. Students will need to submit a book review to complete the card and collect their gifts.
Storytelling Competition
The Storytelling Competition launched this year for Primary 1 and Primary 2 students aims to foster creativity, ignite a passion for storytelling, and enhance essential communication skills. This competition provides students with an opportunity to prepare and share short stories with their classmates, showcasing their imagination and oral communication abilities.
Throughout the competition, students are encouraged to craft engaging narratives, captivate their audience, and effectively convey their stories. Emphasis is placed not only on the content of the stories but also on the delivery and presentation skills demonstrated by the students.
Short Story Writing Competition
The Short Story Writing Competition was launched in 2023 to complete the cycle from listening to publishing. (Listen -> Read -> Speak -> Write). For this competition, students submit their stories online (SLS) after working on them. Selected stories are published in our annual “Our Stories” E-book. Congratulations to all students whose stories had been selected last year! Do read their creative work in the Flipbook below.
The Short Story Writing Competition will be launched in May this year. Do look out for more details soon.
Level/Class Reading Competition
The Level/Class Reading Competition is a vibrant celebration of literacy and imagination, catering to students of all reading abilities. From picture books to chapter novels, every student has the chance to participate and shine, fostering essential skills like comprehension and critical thinking. As students immerse themselves in captivating stories, they not only sharpen their minds but also build camaraderie through shared experiences and a shared love for literature.
Books Exchange Day
Let’s save our Earth! Books Exchange Day allows our students to exchange their already read books with ‘new’ books that will allow them to carry on reading while saving our earth.
Assembly Programmes
The school works closely with NLB to promote the joy of reading in the students. A representative from the NLB will conduct Story Sharing sessions during assembly for the students. NLB will also organize Mass Borrowing sessions in the school where books are brought from the National Library and booths are set up for students to borrow after which they will have to return it directly to the National Library. While Mass Borrowing sessions were temporarily stopped in the past few years, we aim to resume it soon.
